The Context of Nothingness
I started this blog (finally!) to share my visions and ideas with my friends and peers.
Something I have wanted to do for soooo long as I used to look back through my monthly camera roll and think ‘F*ck I need a blog’…
I love original content, a personal view into someone’s life, someone’s creative process, anything… It makes you feel that bit more normal or maybe not…?!
Two of my friends and collaborators Mike Calvino (Director / Producer) and Stuart Chapman (Creative Director) all time guru genius creatives… have started their own personal inspirational documentation weblog…
well before I started mind you, but I thought I would share with you all as these guys have an amazing life of creativity directing a lot of the Girls campaign imagery and production you see for Billabong. I was very fortunate to work on a project with the boys a couple months back and we are planning new and colourful endeavours as we speak. Always a laugh, and a good creative reality kick.!
Some behind the scenes, some from the Photographers they work with, but all beautiful pictures…
Spring
Spring seems to be a time for weddings.
Over this weekend Jaimee and I were invited to attend the wedding of our lovely friends Vanessa and Roy.
It truly was a magic time, the setting, the people, the food and the love that Vanessa and Roy share is just the truth of truth… I had never been to the hinterlands of the Sunshine Coast and now I am very happy to have experienced this. The ceremony was followed by an amazing reception and then a party for friends and family the following night back down on the Sunshine Coast for Halloween celebrations.
We both made home-made costumes with Jaimee as the magical ‘Smurfette’ and myself as the enigmatic iconic ‘Chopper Read’.
enjoy a selection of weekend pics.
‘Mi Casa es Su Casa’
Two of my favourite GC art homies and longtime friends and collaborators,
Colin Wyatt and Kiel Tillman, had their show opening while I was away sunbaking…
So proud of them and the show looks amazing.!
‘Mi Casa es Su Casa’ is at EverEver Gallery in Burleigh and runs until the 9th November.
Check some more pics from the opening and art process at Kiel’s Blog
GLIMPSE 2010
On Tuesday night I attended the graduate show for ‘The Designworks’ college, GLIMPSE at the Robina Art Gallery. I love going to the end of year shows if I can make it because it gives you a fresh perspective on inspiration from the next gen of designers.
I spoke at last years Glimpse opening and I was so happy when I received the invites in the mail this year as one of my all time favourite people, Graham Murdoch of Morrison Media, was the headline act for this year.! I thought I could go and heckle and learn something all at the same time… The truth is, I have looked up to Graham as a designer and mentor for nearly 20 years. In my early days before I could use a computer I would marvel at the mans technical skills and total reckless abandon as I would pass his tiny little office in the halls of MM. He has been on the scalpel and pasteboard before many of us even knew what our career trajectories would be. Such an inspiration and wonderful storyteller, amped me up to be better in so many ways. Thanks mate.
The night also held speeches from Troy from Designworks and Emily Chamberlin & Rebekah Lea of Mae, as well as an amazing raffle and sale of all artworks going to Childhood Cancer Support.
Thanks to Troy and the crew for making it all happen.!
PEDESTRIAN
I have been a fan of Pedestrian ever since their first little plastizine DVD. My how times change…! I loved what they were doing for pop culture back then and I am still an avid reader of their blog now. Once whilst visiting Sydney, Jaimee and I even rocked out one of their ‘Hang the DJ’ nights too.! Good times…
Here is a feature they did on me and my CV a couple months back for those that didn’t get to check it.
S.S.S
Last night saw the closing of the final day of the ‘Gold Coast 600′ or what it has been traditionally known as ‘Indy’. The whole north side of Surfers Paradise is barricaded and closed and messed for a week so punters can drink and shout and watch the cars go about.
This year was different as they had a massive stage setup for concerts on the Broadwater Parklands, Over 3 nights people witnessed bands such as The Beach Boys, Noiseworks, James Reyne, Mondo Rock and other classics… Last night we had the pleasure of seeing Sneaky Sound System and Empire of the Sun close the shows.
For those of you familiar with the history of CK performance pieces you would know that there is a history with Sneaky as I had a role In their music video for UFO, along with the lovely Jaimee who also graced the screen for the now classic video. Whenever they come to town we try and catch their gig and it’s always so much fun to have a sing and dance because they are amazing live.! It was a very different incarnation of SSS with out Daimon Downey rocking the stage. A solid electronic performance, no live drums, Angus working the decks, Donnie Sloan on the Moog and Connie channeling some classic Alison Goldfrapp garb to make it her own with such an amazing voice.
As the fireworks exploded after the last note was struck from Empire of the Sun, The skies opened up with a the heaviest rain we have had in weeks, Jaimee and I ran, jumped a cab, in amazement not a drop hit us as we drove off past Thousands of screaming punters getting absolutely drenched.! We were then treated to an amazing unofficial afterparty at ‘elsewhere’ our favourite club here on the GC which was an intimate Dj set from Angus with improv vocals from Connie which channeled some crazy ‘tribal-percussive-progressive-retrospective-futuristic I don’t know what’. so much fun and very special.
You just gotta do these things sometimes…
And just for ‘Olde Times Sake’… Please enjoy the Original Director’s Cut of UFO directed by Clement Beauvais, filmed right here on the GC. …Keep an eye out for the Pink Pants and the Slave Girl.
